Subject: Alumni Newsletter – Spring 2008
From: Tim Hurt, noehurt@charter.net
Alumni Directory
We have enclosed a copy of the Theta-Theta Alumni directory. We hope it will help re-connect many of you with friends from years gone by.
If you have moved and / or if we are missing your e-mail address please contact Tim Hurt ’81 at noehurt@charter.net or mail the information to Tim at 1017 Bee Tee Lane, Pleasant View, TN. 37146. If you have information on a missing brother, please forward that on as well.
Chapter News
It has been an exciting year for the brothers of Theta-Theta; after a great Fall Semester, which was capped it off by placing
3rd overall in Fraternity Grade rankings with a cumulative GPA of 2.82, well above the All Fraternity (2.68), and All Men’s
(2.5) Average’s. Theta-Theta is ready to make the Spring Semester even better.
At the 2008 Academic Banquet Kappa Sigma took home 5 awards: 3rd Place, Fraternity New Member GPA for Spring ’07, 3rd Place,
Fraternity Active Member GPA Fall ’07, 3rd Place, Fraternity Combined Member GPA Fall ’07. Brother Sam Northern –
Fraternity Senior with Highest GPA. IFC Most Improved Fraternity GPA.
This semester started off with a historic event, Theta-Theta moved into its first Chapter-owned Chapter house.
It was the action of Alumni Brother’s Joe Imel, Joey Huggins, Eric Hollingsworth, and Brett Pitchford
(who all co-signed for the mortgage) that made this dream a reality. Recruitment went well this semester
with the pledging of three men in mid February. A continued growth of interest in the Ritual that binds us
all has led to more brothers being tested and becoming ritually proficient, bringing us just under a 30% proficiency level.
I would like to take this time to invite you all to an “Open House” with a brief Dedication Ceremony at
the new Chapter House (321 East 13th Ave.) on Saturday, April 5th from 2:00pm – 5:00pm.
The active brothers look forward to seeing you all on that day and celebrating together
this momentous occasion. A.E.K.D.B. Brothers!
Semper,
Andrew Heineman –Chapter Grand Master
Homecoming 2008 - “Weekend of November 1st”
Homecoming 2007 saw more than 40 alumni, many from the 1960’s and early 1970’s return to the “Hill”. For some this was
their first trip back to Bowling Green since graduation. Friday night the alumni gathered at Split Tree BBQ for dinner and
later that evening Alumni Brother Bart Ashley ’66 and his wife Jo-Ann opened their home for a special “Welcome Back” reception.
Brother’s Tom Adams ’67 and Dennis Adams ’66 were instrumental in organizing the reunion.
Keith Pawley ’75 and Rick Mitchell ’75 are co-chairing 2008 Homecoming.
Please contact Keith at BJKC55@Logantele.com or Rick at rick.mitchell@bbswork.com if you would
like more information about Homecoming or if you would like to organize a re-union of brothers from your era.
Housing Corporation – Purchases Theta-Theta’s “First Chapter House!
The Chapter recently moved into a chapter house at 321 E. 13th Ave. After decades of leasing houses, the Housing Corporation purchased the property. The 2,220 square foot house sleeps 8-9 actives. It is located at the end of the future site of sorority row. The chapter, for the first time in its nearly 43-year history, owns a house and controls its destiny at WKU. The Housing Corporation hired a local contractor to renovate the interior, adding a room, a shower and landing downstairs. Actives and local alumni spent two weeks cleaning, painting and moving in. The house features a pool table, flat screen TV, as well as a refrigerator and microwave donated by alumni Scott Harris, and a couch, chairs and ottoman donated by friends of local alumni. Pictures of the house will be placed on the Theta-Theta website soon.

Subject: 2006 Theta-theta and Friends Golf Scramble Summary
From: Chad Hennessey , chadh@insuramax.com
Our annual golf scramble came and went this past weekend. I'd like to thank all of those who played and made the event successful. We had 30 players spread out over 9 teams. The weather which started off rough, actually worked out nice. Most of us stayed dry for 18 holes.
Congratulations goes out to Austin Smith, Chris Nowak and Tom Bizzell for winning the scramble at minus 14. All nine teams finished within 6 strokes of the wining score.
The final figures aren't ready just yet (waiting for those checks to clear), but it looks like $400 was raised and will be sent down to chapter to go towards their Fall Rush.
I'm proud to say that we've raised just under $2,000 for Theta-theta in the six years that we've been having the scramble.
A couple of fun facts: we had brothers come from four states (Kentucky, Tennessee, Ohio, and Georgia), and we had four first time players.
Thanks to those that made the extra phone calls for me and a Special Thanks goes to Mark Flum for throwing a great "post" party at his house the night of the scramble.
A few suggestions were brought up to me after this years event that will be addressed before 2007. Namely, moving the scramble to possibly July or August. (To get away from the "wet" April weather) And the even the possibility of moving the scramble to Bowling Green.
Any further suggestions or input is greatly appreciated.
Again, I wouldn't do this if I didn't enjoy it!

Subject: Kappa Sig Fantasy Football Weekend
From: Michael Banks, mbanks@carolina.rr.com
Hi All, Once again, for a 15th straight year, several brothers from Theta-Theta will gather again for an annual tradition - the Kappa Sig Fantasy Football Draft. Started in 1989 in the chapter room of the old house at 1600, the fantasy football league has continued to gather each weekend prior to or of the opening weekend of the NFL season to conduct our annual draft. While the draft is the gist of our gathering, the weekend provides fellowship, plenty of memories and enduring our bonds as brothers. The majority of our league members were at Western from 1985 thru 1994, and we've maintained our league membership at 16 for all these years. For the first several years, we held our draft in Bowling Green. However, as we landed jobs and got a little more green in the bank, we expanded our draft sites to such locales as New Orleans, Las Vegas, Toronto, Boston, Chicago, Miami and Cleveland. The weekend is a fun time and we've had several non league members attend over the years as well, as they've enjoyed the brotherhood. This year, the draft once again heads to Las Vegas on the weekend of Sept. 10-12. We've got plenty of party plans in place as us mid 30s fellas still strive to stay out past midnight. We're staying at the Mandalay Bay. Again, I'd like to invite any and all alumni, as well as active brothers to attend. Please e-mail me at mbanks@carolina.rr.com if you have any questions or would like more info.

Subject: Chapter House Work Weekend Aug 7-8
From: Joe Imel, jpic@mindspring.com
The Kappa Sigma Housing corporation is planning a work weekend Aug. 7 and 8, 2004, at the Theta-Theta Chapter House at 1266 Kentucky Street. We are hoping to have a strong showing of alumni to work side-by-side with the undergraduate chapter to clean, paint and do minor repairs in preparation for Fall Rush.
We have a strong chapter of capable young men who are looking and wanting contact with alumni to add to their fraternity experience. I can tell you as an alumni that works with them on a daily basis, it is both gratifying and fulfilling to be a part of the fraternity on this level.
If you can only come by for a few hours, we welcome you. Think about asking a fellow brother to come along. If you have any cleaning or repair supplies you would like to donate, please feel free. We could also use several truckloads of gravel for the back lot. You can call me on my cell phone at 270-792-6304 or reply via email if you plan to attend.
And please don't forget that we have our local alumni gathering on the last Thursday of the month at BW3's on Scottsville Road at about 6 p.m. Families are welcome! This month it will be Thursday July 29th. So make plans to stop by.
We are in the midst of planning homecoming and putting the final touches on the alumni newsletter. So, if you have anything to contribute or news to share or spread, email it to Joe Imel at jpic@mindspring.com

Subject: ‘Greek Village’ meeting Thursday night
From: BGDailyNews.com, dnews@bgdailynews.com
A public meeting will be held Thursday evening to hear about and discuss a plan to turn the area between Kentucky and Center streets near Western Kentucky University’s campus into a "Greek Village" - houses for fraternities, sororities and other university-related organizations. The meeting on the WKU Area Redevelopment Plan will be at 6 p.m. at the Community Church of Christ, 213 E. 12th Ave. The plan encompasses the area bounded by East 12th Avenue, Western’s campus, the CSX railroad and College Street. The proposed Greek Village would be developed in phases, stretching from the alley between Center and College Streets to Kentucky Street for about half a block adjacent to Western’s campus, according to a map prepared by the City-County Planning Commission of Warren County. It would then narrow to the width of the block between Center and Kentucky, running to within half a block of 12th Avenue. Surrounding areas would be divided into residential, commercial and mixed uses, with the area next to Western along Adams Street marked for "possible WKU expansion/parking." The plan proposes closing the current line of 14th Avenue, and shifting most of it to a new course half a block toward downtown. Thirteenth Avenue would also be closed between Center Street and the CSX railroad tracks. - A map of the area is available at www.warrenpc.org. To view the entire Redevelopment Plan, visit the city’s Web site at www.bgky.org

Subject: FRATERNITY RANKINGS
From: Kevin S. Kaplan, Worthy Grand Master
Brothers,
Here are some results from the Fraternity Executive's Association (FEA) survey for the 2002-03 academic year. It is important to emphasize that these are last year's results and do not reflect the historic gains that Kappa Sigma has made this year.
FEA 2002-03 SURVEY
1. Kappa Sigma again ranked NUMBER ONE for lowest costs to our undergraduates.
2. Kappa Sigma ranked fifth in number of men pledged.
3. Initiation and pledging fees are the lowest for fraternities with 100 or more chapters.
4. Kappa Sigma ranked sixth in total number of chapters and colonies.
5. Kappa Sigma ranks seventh in number of new initiates.
Please let these results serve as motivation to accomplish our goal of being NUMBER ONE in all areas. The fact is, we are well on our way.
As previously reported, through December 31, the Kappa Sigma Fraternity is up an astonishing 30% in number of men pledged and a record 44% in number of initiates. Additionally, we have established 10 colonies (dormant and new) to date.
Kappa Sigma will not play second fiddle to any other fraternity. Our rightful place is NUMBER ONE. I look forward to seeing the FEA Survey for 2003-04.

Subject: Kappa Sigma may be first in new Greek Village
From: Jim Gaines, BGDailyNews.com, jgaines@bgdailynews.com Kappa Sigma will likely be the first fraternal organization to move to the site of the proposed Greek Village, a concentration of such groups planned adjacent to Western Kentucky University.
The University District Review Committee, which oversees activity in the area near Western where fraternities, sororities and Western-associated groups are encouraged to locate, approved the fraternity’s request to move into an existing house at 1266 Kentucky St.
The group has signed a lease on the house and asked that 12 fraternity members live there, said Steve Hunter from the City-County Planning Commission of Warren County.
The group knows that if redevelopment plans for that 11/2-block area go through, the house currently on the site will be demolished within a couple of years to build the new Greek Village, Hunter said. That’s why planners did not insist on paving the rear parking area, as would normally be required, he said. Joe Imel, Housing Corps president for Kappa Sigma, told the committee that the fraternity plans to remain in the Greek Village when it is built, and will use the next two years to raise money for a new house.
Building and fire inspectors cleared the house for occupancy with the installation of fire doors, exit signs and smoke detectors. A privacy fence will be installed on the northeast side. Committee member Scott Taylor added a request that three fire escape ladders be installed to second-floor windows, and the application was improved. Fraternity members plan to occupy the house this fall.
The Greek village would run between Center and Kentucky streets, two blocks west of 12th Avenue to the proposed location of the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center.
A tentative project design, prepared for the City-County Planning Commission of Warren County, shows 11 Greek houses, ranging from 6,000 to 10,000 square feet, arranged in a U-shape around the blocks, with parking and a large green space in the center.
That area was added to the University District in May, and properties near Normal Drive were removed.
"You’re adding 5.3 acres and taking away 15 acres," Andy Gillies, executive director of the planning commission, told the committee.
The change removed the current Sigma Chi fraternity house from the district. That group has already bought seven building lots in the proposed Greek Village, and has submitted tentative plans for a 10,000-square-foot house.
"They’re in the process of moving to the new block for the Greek Village," Gillies said.
Planners are working with the city to come up with a redevelopment plan for that and the surrounding area, he said. Under Chapter 99 of Kentucky statutes, that plan would give the city authority to buy or condemn property under the justification of redevelopment for the public good.
Bowling Green would clear the legal path for Western, possibly using its power of eminent domain to buy and clear land – and issuing up to $2 million in bonds for the project on the city’s credit rating. Western would repay the bonds, as it is doing under a current arrangement for the renovation of E.A. Diddle Arena.
A similar plan was approved in January for a 29-block area of downtown Bowling Green, under which the city has received several large grants to redevelop properties.
Planners and the city expect to have a redevelopment plan for the Greek Village area approved before Christmas, Gillies said.
Committee member Carol Haskins Wedge, noting that the tentative plan shows 11 houses while there are more than two dozen potential tenant groups, asked if there were plans to expand the Greek Village further.
Some groups will want to stay in their current houses, Hunter said. But Gillies said that if there was sufficient demand, more blocks on Center Street could be redeveloped as Greek housing eventually.

Dear Brothers:
It is with sorrow that I inform you of the death of Brother Barry Ingram, who died on Tuesday March 25, 2003.
He was 44 years old. Barry was killed when a ladder he was using to trim trees fell into an electrical transformer.
Barry was a member of the Alpha Psi Pledge Class. He was initiated into the Theta-Theta chapter of Kappa Sigma in the spring of 1988. Obituary
